Last night, Bryce and I were able to attend a new exhibit at the Springville Museum of Art, Curiouser and Curiouser: The artwork of James Christensen, Cassandra Barney, Emily McPhie & Family. It was amazing to see some of the artwork that I loved and was inspired by since my early teens. My parents bought me two of James Christensen’s art books for Christmas one year, and I LOVED those books. I studied each painting, awestruck by the color and detail, the delicate gauze of fairy cloth, the gnarly trunks and faces, the soulful eyes and messages. I even tried to create art that looked like it was made by James Christensen (not that anyone would have been too convinced). It was exciting to finally meet the man that created all of those beautiful ideas and images, and inspired me to create.
The influence of growing up in a home where creativity and artistic expression is nurtured is a theme of the exhibit. His two daughters that are also showcased are talented artists with unique and recognizable styles of their own. We got a photo with Emily McPhie in front of one of her paintings titled “A Penitent and Humble Seeker”.
I just read a blog post she wrote about the piece, and it sheds some light on how to interpret her painting. You can read about it at at:
I truly enjoyed this exhibit, and highly recommend that you go and check it out if you are in the area. It runs Dec 11th, 2013 – Apil 6th, 2014.
